Terumo Takes #1 Position in Global Perfusion Market with Japanese Acquisition
Terumo Corporation announced that it has acquired the perfusion products business in Japan from Edwards Lifesciences, Ltd., making Terumo the global brand leader in the perfusion products market segment. Terumo products now account for 50% of the perfusion market in Japan and 31% globally.
The acquisition reflects the company's two-part strategy for its global cardiac surgery businesses: reinforce a leadership position in its core business, the perfusion products segment, while expanding into new segments such as endoscopic systems.
In the U.S., Terumo Cardiovascular Systems' growth in the perfusion product segment is attributed to the introduction of new products including Terumo Advanced Perfusion System 1, CAPIOX RX Oxygenators, and X Coating, a biocompatible surface treatment. The company has also built market share through distribution agreements for Pall Filters, Fresenius C.A.T.S Autotransfusion System, and Minntech Hemoconcentrators.
"I think our commitment to the perfusionist and the perfusion industry is evident in more than just our market leading position. Our perfusion product offering is increasingly focused on patient benefit, which is part of Terumo's stated mission,” says Dana Currier, General Manager, CV Perfusion Products Business Unit at Terumo Cardiovascular Systems.
