Terumo Cardiovascular Systems Announces Registration for 2009 Optimizing Cardiac Surgery® Symposia Season
Ann Arbor, MI — February 6, 2009 — Terumo Cardiovascular Systems (Terumo CVS) has opened registration for its 2009 Optimizing Cardiac Surgery Symposia Season, a series of symposia focused on best practices in cardiopulmonary bypass. The 2009 series, entitled "Advancing Blood Management,” features presentations by clinicians that focus on improving patient outcomes and reducing hospital costs. Past symposia have featured clinicians presenting their experience with reduced prime circuits, platelet gel, biocompatible coatings, leukocyte reduction, and data management.
Terumo CVS has sponsored the series for seven years. The symposia are scheduled as adjuncts to national meetings for U.S. perfusionists who can earn additional continuing education credits (CEUs) when attending. In 2009, the symposia will be held February 13 in San Diego, California during the San Diego Cardiothoracic Surgery Symposium, and May 21 in Orlando, Florida just prior to the Mechanisms of Perfusion Conference.
Blood management has become an increasingly relevant topic within the national health care community. According to the Wall Street Journal (October 30, 2008): more hospitals are developing guidelines to manage transfusions; the nonprofit Joint Commission, the leading hospital-accreditation group, has assembled a task force of blood management experts to develop a program designed to help hospitals safely manage their blood supply; and the Society for the Advancement of Blood Management has begun an awareness campaign aimed at both consumers and health care professionals.

"Blood Management: A Primer for Clinicians," by Jonathan Waters, MD, Chief of Anesthesia Services at Magee-Womens Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and Medical Director of the University of Pittsburgh Health System's Perioperative Blood Management program.
"The Imperative Behind Blood Management: The patient and hospital perspective," by Tim Hannon, MD, Medical director of the St. Vincent Indianapolis Blood Management Program.
"Importance of Using Data Management in a Blood Management Program," by Gyula Sziraczky, President and CEO, ARMUS Corporation.
"The Fairfax Experience," by David Fitzgerald, CCP, Chief of Perfusion at INOVA Heart and Vascular Institute, in Fairfax, Virginia.
The Optimizing Cardiac Surgery symposia are "a unique way of presenting current issues in perfusion and are on target with current topics that perfusionists are addressing,” according to Garland Dance, CCP, Director of Perfusion Services, Hackensack University Medical Center.
